Rehab News:Abstinence 'just the start of recovery'

Abstaining from alcohol is just the starting point of recovery for people with alcohol abuse disorders, scientists have said.

A panel of experts from the Betty Ford Institute have developed an initial definition of recovery, labelling it as "a voluntarily maintained lifestyle characterised by sobriety, personal health and citizenship".

In a paper published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, the experts note that there has not previously been an actual definition for the term 'recovery', despite the fact that it is widely recognised as the goal of treatment for substance and alcohol abuse.

"Recovery may be the best word to summarise all the positive benefits to physical, mental and social health that can happen when alcohol- and other drug-dependent individuals get the help they need," the experts wrote.

Within the definition, the researchers point out the sobriety is necessary but not in itself sufficient for successful recovery.

They also classify different durations of sobriety and propose 'early' sobriety as between one month and one year; 'sustained' sobriety as between one and five years; and 'stable' sobriety as lasting for five years or longer.

The experts hope that defining recovery may help to remove some of the obstacles to alcohol treatment and liken recovering alcoholics to cancer survivors, in that as the years go by, the risk of relapse decreases significantly.
