Rehab News:Above inflation tax rises set to hit alcohol sales

Reports suggest that the chancellor is set to impose above-inflation tax rises on alcohol.

It is expected that Alistair Darling will use his first budget to introduce the first price-hike for wines and spirits for eleven years.

But the Herald reported that Mr Darling will not cite the reason behind the increases as to tackle the UK's growing alcohol abuse problem.

And the Independent reported that he will not use the opportunity to follow Conservative suggestions that tax rises on drinks such as alcopops are necessary to curb under-age binge-drinking.

Above-inflation tax increases could see more than 8.5 pence added to the price of an average bottle of wine and over 30 pence on top of the current cost of a litre of whisky.

The Herald reported that the Scottish National Party has accused the chancellor of using the whisky industry as "a cash cow", thereby damaging Scotland's economy.

Mr Darling will announce the budget on Wednesday.
