Rehab News:4million dollar grant for cannabis research

A four million dollar grant will allow researchers in the United States to undertake a comprehensive study into the effects of chronic cannabis use.

The funds from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Nida) will allow the development of a new Translational Center on the Clinical Neurobiology of Cannabis Addiction, the first to be dedicated to researching the neurobiology of marijuana dependence.

A group of investigators led by the Scripps Research Institute's Professor Barbara Mason won the grant after applying to Nida to study the issue.

Professor Mason said: "While there are some people who have a problem with both alcohol and cannabis, many individuals are dependent on cannabis alone," adding: "The estimate is that about four per cent of those who use cannabis eventually become addicted to it."

Researchers will aim to develop novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cannabis addiction. Professor Mason noted that there is a lot they need to know "in order to develop effective treatments".

Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Britain and the USA.
