Rehab News:'One fifth' of US students abusing prescription drugs

US students are turning to prescription drugs for recreational use, leading to many being at risk of addiction, new figures have suggested.

A study has revealed that around 20 per cent of students in America are using medicines such as painkillers to get high, according to Reuters.

Researchers at the University of Michigan asked nearly 4,000 college students if they had taken any of four types of prescription drugs.

And while 60 per cent said they had used them for medical reasons, twenty per cent admitted to taking the substances for non-medical reasons.

The researchers used their findings to assess how many of the respondents had a drug abuse problem.

They warned that students appear unaware that the risks associated with the abuse of prescription medication are the same as those linked to illegal drugs.

Carol Boyd of the University of Michigan's Substance Abuse Research Center said: "They perceive prescription medications as safer than street drugs such as cocaine and heroin despite the fact that the stimulants and the opioids (painkillers) are just like cocaine and heroin. And they're very easy for them to get," reported the agency.

The anti-depressant Xanax is the most abused prescription substance in the US, according to online source Prescription Drug Addiction.
