Rehab News: Three tenths of US adults claim to have abused alcohol

Some 30 per cent of Americans claim to have had some form of alcohol disorder during their lifetime, including 17.8 per cent with alcohol abuse and 12.5 per cent with alcohol dependence, a new study has revealed.

Researchers at New York's Columbia University Medical Centre analysed data from 43,093 adults interviewed between 2001 and 2002 and discovered some notable trends.

"Alcohol dependence was significantly more prevalent among men, whites, native Americans, younger and unmarried adults and those with lower incomes," the authors wrote, publishing their findings in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

The study also found that alcohol abuse developed at an average age of 22.5 years, while alcohol dependence typically began at 21.9 years of age.

However, patients typically did not receive alcohol treatment for eight years after initially developing the condition.

The authors noted that alcohol abuse and dependence "remain highly prevalent and disabling".

"Persistent low treatment rates given the availability of effective treatments indicate the need for vigorous education efforts for the public and professionals," they concluded.
