Rehab News: Sharp rise in City workers seeking alcohol treatment

The number of City workers requiring drug and alcohol treatment linked to stress-related illness has more than doubled in the past three years, a rehabilitation clinic has claimed.

Increasing workloads and a tendency to work long hours is leading many workers to seek relief from alcohol, but a growing number are drinking to excess and find themselves unable to kick the habit without seeking professional advice.

As a result, clinics such as the Priory are providing alcohol treatment for around twice as many clients as they were in 2004.

"As a result of stress, people get involved in substance abuse and other forms of behavioural abuse," Marco Martinez, the clinic's business development director, told the Evening Standard.

"There is alcohol abuse and cocaine is increasingly commonplace now. That's how people wind down after working in these macho environments," the director revealed.

Recent research by mental health association Together found that a quarter of City workers know someone who has suffered from stress-related mental health problems, and Mr Martinez urged companies to look after their employees in order to reduce the levels of stress.
