Rehab News: Safe drinking scheme wins funding award

An initiative run by community nurses has won a national award to help fund its work on safe drinking.

The Ribbleton Alcohol Brief Intervention project in Preston has been awarded funding by the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI), which praised the dedication of the team and said that the project should have a lasting impact.

The scheme helps to educate members of the community on safe drinking and encourages people to adjust their behaviour and reduce their alcohol consumption if necessary.

New parents will be asked to fill in a questionnaire on their drinking habits and will be urged to seek alcohol treatment if necessary.

Parents whose alcohol consumption is deemed to be of concern will be revisited by district nurses or health visitors every eight months to seek how they are progressing.

Nurse Patsy Myerscough told Nursing in Practice that the team were "delighted" that their work had been officially recognised.

"We are Central Lancashire PCT are committed to helping people identify if they are drinking too much so that we can help and, if necessary, provide the necessary support."

QNI director Rosemary Cook said that the project demonstrated "that community nursing is truly at the forefront of patient care".

She added that the institute was delighted to provide funding and support, as well as recognition for such innovative work.
