Rehab News: Pioneering alcohol harm reduction programme launched

Wirral primary care trust (PCT) has launched a pioneering alcohol harm reduction programme, designed to enable early intervention in patients at risk of alcohol-related health problems.

All patients who pass through the clinic will be screened to assess their level of alcohol consumption and patients will be graded as 'safe', 'hazardous' or 'harmful' drinkers.

According to the PCT, this process will enable them to diagnose patients in need of alcohol treatment at an earlier stage and hopefully prevent many from experiencing long-term health problems.

Stefan Janikiewicz, clinical director of the Wirral Alcohol Service, indicated his support for the initiative.

"I believe that alcohol screening and brief intervention should be a normal part of everyday consulting with every patient, and I would encourage every practice to start engaging with the issue," he told Nursing in Practice.

A recent report compiled by the Healthcare Commission and the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse highlighted Wirral Drug and Alcohol Action Team as one of the highest performing in the country.
