Rehab News: MP seeks change in alcohol advertising law

Liberal Democrat MP Sandra Gidley has laid down a bill in the House of Commons calling for a ban on pre-watershed advertising of alcohol to help tackle alcohol abuse in the UK.

Ms Gidley wants action to be taken to reduce alcohol-related offences and cut the amount spent by the NHS on alcohol treatment, which is estimated to be in the region of £25 billion a year.

The Romsey MP told the Basingstoke Gazette: "If ministers are serious about putting a stop to the binge drinking culture, they should take the need for legislation seriously.

"Alcohol is a source of great enjoyment to many, rather than a problem. However, we need to change the culture where binge drinking is acceptable - we need a sensible alcohol policy," she claimed.

The bill is scheduled to receive its second hearing in October and it is hoped that it will increase awareness of alcohol-related problems, even if the proposals do not become law.
