Rehab News: Japanese prince breaks alcohol taboo

The 61-year-old cousin of Japan's Emperor Akihito has broken one of the nation's taboos by speaking of his own experiences of alcoholism.

Alcohol abuse is deemed to be too shameful to discuss in Japan; yet Prince Tomohito introduced himself to guests at a lecture as "the alcoholic", the Associated Press reveals.

The prince noted that he wanted to prevent unnecessary speculation about his drinking and told listeners that he had "nothing to hide".

"I've been drinking heavily since I was a college student, and I don't want you to think I just developed the problem," he explained.

The prince's doctors have reportedly been keen to keep his alcoholism under wraps; but Prince Tomohito insisted that by disclosing his alcohol dependency he was helping to provide moral support for fellow patients undergoing alcohol treatment.

"Patients are overjoyed to know they've got a friend in the royal family," he added.

The prince has been receiving alcohol treatment at a palace hospital and is one of an estimated 2.3 million people in Japan who are alcohol dependent.

Around five per cent of the UK's population (around three million people) are thought to be physically addicted to alcohol.
