Rehab News: Extroverts more likely to resort to alcohol

People who are outgoing tend to be more likely to drink excessively under pressure, researchers have said.

Dutch psychologist Sander Bot, a researcher at Radboud University in the Netherlands, found that young, friendly people tend to be more influenced by other people's alcohol intake and the amount they drink frequently depends on the amount consumed by other members of their social group.

The researcher carried out a study involving young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years.

He found that the sex ratio in a group is a major factor in determining alcohol use, as the more men that are present, the greater the amount of alcohol consumed by both men and women.

Mr Bot noticed that men are more likely than women to adjust their level of drinking in line with other people's, and women are more likely to stop drinking earlier when men are around.

The researcher also found that previous research suggesting people drink less if they are actively involved in games such as darts or cards may be incorrect.

In fact, while consumption did tend to decrease during a game, the study participants consumed far more than usual after the game so that overall alcohol consumption was not influenced by game-playing.
