Rehab News: Anti smoking drug may help drinkers

An existing anti-smoking drug may also be effective in treating alcohol dependence, US researchers have found.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, conducted tests using rats which were given access to unlimited amounts of alcohol to see if the drug varenicline might be used as an alcohol treatment.

The team, led by Dr Selena Bartlett, found that rats given a single dose of varenicline, which is marketed as Champix in the UK, cut their drinking in half on the first day of treatment.

Rats which were given the drug every other day for a week maintained this lower level of drinking and, after the treatment was stopped, returned to their previous level of drinking.

The findings, which are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also suggest that unlike other alcohol treatments, the drug does not suppress the appetite.

Dr Bartlett commented: "Alcoholism takes a tremendous toll, and so few drugs are available to counter it.

"The biggest thrill is that this drug, which has already proved safe for people trying to stop smoking, is now a potential drug to fight alcohol dependence."

The researcher added that people with alcohol dependence should seek alcohol treatment, in the same way that they would seek treatment for any other disease.
