Rehab News: Alcohol Concern urges public consultation response

Alcohol Concern is urging members of the public to respond to the government consultation on a new health and social care outcomes and accountability framework.

The agency wants the Department of Health to include a specific alcohol outcome within the proposed set of national outcomes and objectives.

It points out that, although there is a proposed indicator for alcohol within outcome nine, there is no specific outcome proposed for alcohol.

In its response to the Department of Health, Alcohol Concern points out that reducing the health harms caused by alcohol carries a positive benefit to individuals, their families and society.

"It is imperative therefore that PCTs and local authorities are able to choose an outcome to specifically reduce alcohol harm," the agency said.

"This is the only way to enable local action to reduce harmful drinking and promote sensible drinking."

Figures suggest that one in every 18 problem drinkers is unable to access the support and alcohol treatment they need, costing the NHS £1.7 billion every year.

Consultation responses must be submitted by July 27th 2007.
