What is heroin rehab?
Heroin rehab refers to treatment dedicated towards rehabilitating heroin dependent individuals, ideally via psychological and therapeutic programmes and medicated support.
Heroin rehab can be accessed in a number of ways. Residential heroin rehab involves staying in a treatment centre for a period of weeks, and having round the clock support from professional and experienced staff. The daily psychological and therapeutic programme may also be accessed on an out-patient basis. However, this will involve individuals returning home at the end of each day which can expose them to the triggers which previously caused them to use heroin. Community based heroin rehab is also available, and will involve individuals accessing local drug services or fellowship meetings for help in overcoming their heroin dependence.
Despite these differences, heroin rehab is accessed most intensively in a residential treatment centre. This is supported by a number of research studies, such as the National Treatment Outcome Research Study (Gossop et al., 1996) and the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the National Treatment Agency (Finney, 2009). Residential heroin rehab is likely to bring about the best chance of a successful outcome because it provides treatment for both the physical and psychological aspects of the heroin dependence, all within the confines of a safe, structured and professional environment.
When should someone seek heroin rehab?
Strong indicators that someone needs to seek residential heroin rehab are heroin withdrawal symptoms. A heroin dependent individual can begin to feel depressed, anxious, agitated, feverish, and may feel nauseous, achy or suffer from diarrhoea if no heroin has been accessed for a period of time. Although these symptoms are typically not fatal, they are extremely uncomfortable and may result in the individual quickly using heroin again. At a residential heroin rehab centre, medication will be given to ease these withdrawal symptoms and make the process as comfortable as possible. Individuals will be supported throughout their detox by medical and professional support staff.
Social and behavioural factors may also indicate that your loved one needs heroin rehabilitation. For instance, they may keep unusual and unpredictable hours. They may associate with new and unfamiliar individuals. They may be getting into trouble with the police frequently, or you yourself may notice valuables and money going missing. If such signs are very much out of character, then it may suggest heroin is involved and heroin rehabilitation is needed. Call us now if you suspect that this might be the case; our experienced advisors are on hand to help guide you through the situation.
Heroin rehabilitation options
There are facilities throughout the UK that can offer individuals heroin rehabilitation. Triage Healthcare only work with those centres that offer high retention rates and excellent psychological and therapeutic programmes, as well as a professional and structured environment in which a heroin detox can safely take place. We have an in-depth knowledge of the full range of treatment services and will advise you independently of any particular centre.
It is also possible to access private overseas heroin rehabilitation programmes. This option can be particularly appealing to those individuals who have already accessed help in the UK with limited success. By travelling overseas to access treatment, the person is completely removed from their problematic surroundings. Overseas treatment can also represent better value for money in some cases.
It is also possible to access free NHS services. Whilst it would clearly be preferable to receive heroin rehabilitation without having to pay for it, it is important to remember that there is an imbalance between availability of addiction treatment in the NHS and the demand in the community. Therefore, there can often be long waiting lists involved when trying to access the NHS options.
Not everyone will be in a position to access residential treatment privately or be offered it on the NHS. For those in that position it can be easy to lose motivation and become frustrated with the situation. We know the challenges faced when trying to access NHS treatment. We can offer advice on alternative treatment options as well as offer support and encouragement during this time.
How long could Heroin rehab take?
A detox from heroin at a rehab heroin centre typically takes a minimum of two weeks. However, it is vital to a successful outcome that a full residential programme is accessed. This means that individuals will receive intensive support to address the psychological reasons underlying the heroin dependence after they have completed detox. One to one and group therapy will be aimed at relapse prevention and the development of healthy coping strategies. Relaxation and holistic therapies, education around addictions, and structured activities will also form part of the rehab heroin programme. Ideally, this means individuals should access a six to twelve week long programme.
Heroin rehab aftercare support
If residential rehab heroin therapy is accessed, individuals will have an intensive and structured environment in which to build the foundation of their recovery. Once out of the treatment centre, it is vital that individuals continue building on this. Aftercare involves post treatment support, and should ideally take place with a one to one specialist addictions counsellor. Alongside this, individuals should also attend group meetings at Narcotics Anonymous and the local drug services as frequently as possible.
How much does a private Heroin rehab centre cost?
Triage Healthcare recognises that there is a deficit in the provision of affordable private treatment for addictions in the UK. High quality free advice and information is provided to all, as well as best-value private treatment to individuals with a limited budget. If you arrange treatment through Triage Healthcare you will never pay more and in some cases you will pay less for residential treatment than by booking direct with a treatment centre.
