What is a drug center?

A drug center is a place where a drug dependent individual can go in order to receive treatment. This will typically begin with a medicated detox, if required. The aim of this is to reduce the discomfort associated with withdrawal from drugs. At a drug center, staff will also be available throughout the day and night to make the process as safe as possible.

A drug center will also provide intensive treatment for the psychological dependence present in all drug addictions. This aims to give people the coping/relapse prevention strategies needed to maintain their abstinence into the future. The therapeutic programme available at a drug center will also endeavour to address the causes underpinning the addiction. Such a programme at drug clinics typically involves one-to-one counselling, group therapy, education around addictions, reflection activities and more holistic therapies, such as reflexology, acupuncture and yoga.

It is also strongly encouraged that aftercare is organized for people upon leaving the drug center. The environment within drug centres is very intensive and conducive to recovery. However, a home environment typically lacks this and returning home unsupported can increase the chance of relapse during this vulnerable time. Therefore, it is important that one-to-one specialist addictions counselling is taken up after treatment at drug centres. This will give individuals the opportunity to further discuss their dependence on a one-to-one basis, and will allow an opportunity to reiterate coping and relapse prevention strategies.

Most drug clinics will also follow the 12 steps abstinence based model. During treatment, most people will have the opportunity to attend fellowship meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. This provides an excellent foundation for the continuation of attending these meetings upon leaving drug clinics.

Drugs centers can cater for a range of drug dependences. This included heroin, cannabis, cocaine and prescription drugs, amongst others.

When should someone seek a drug centre?

Drugs centers should be the first choice of treatment for anyone who has a drug addiction. According to the National Treatment Outcomes Research Study (NTORS), treatment at drug centres is more effective than community-based treatment. Although the outcomes were comparable, drug centres typically treated people with more severe and longer standing addictions. Thus, the intensive environment and round the clock support from peers and addictions specialists available at drug centres can be enormously beneficial for recovery.

There are a number of signs that indicate a person needs access to the treatment offered at drug clinics. For instance, their behaviour may change as it becomes more orientated towards drugs. They may become irritable, anxious and withdrawn. A change in their social habits may also be an important indicator, such as beginning to keep unusual and unpredictable hours. There may also be a noticeable decline in their appearance, such as significant weight loss and less attention to personal care. These all suggest that the person needs the treatment available at drug addiction clinics.

Where to find drug abuse centers

Triage Healthcare work with private drug clinics throughout the UK. We will help you arrange treatment at a drugs center that meets your needs, wishes and budget.

It is also possible to access private overseas drug clinics. This option can be particularly appealing to those individuals who have already accessed drug addiction clinics help in the UK with limited success. By travelling overseas to access drug clinics, the person is completely removed from their problematic surroundings. Overseas treatment at drug centres can also represent better value for money in some cases.

Whilst it would clearly be preferable to receive treatment at drug centres without having to pay for it, it is important to remember that there is an imbalance between availability of addiction treatment in the NHS and the demand in the community. Therefore, there can often be long waiting lists involved when trying to access a drugs center on the NHS. Although not as intensive as the treatment available at a drugs center, the NHS community support available in most areas is certainly better than receiving no help at all.

How long could a drug addiction centre program take?

The length of treatment at a drugs center will vary between individuals. For an alcohol addiction, the minimum recommended length of time at a drug abuse center is four weeks. For drugs, this increases to six weeks due to the length of time needed to detox initially. However, a drug abuse center may provide access to shorter programmes as well. Typically the minimum length of stay for alcohol dependence is one week. For other substances, a drug abuse center may allow a minimum stay of two weeks.

It is important to take into account that a shorter programme at a drug abuse center will focus primarily on the physical aspect of the addiction. Therefore, longer programmes should always be considered initially because of the intensive therapeutic treatment that will be received at drug abuse clinics.

How much does a private drug addiction centre cost?

The cost of treatment at drug abuse clinics will depend on the location, accommodation standard and the level of nursing and psychiatric provision available. This will differ between drug abuse programs. Therefore, Triage Healthcare works with a range of drug abuse clinics in order to meet an array of individual requirements. We only work with drug abuse clinics that are regulated by the appropriate governing body, and who adhere to the high standards of care expected of them. Therefore, the quality of the psychological and therapeutic programme is not something that you will compromise on when accessing the best value drug addiction centres.
