What is a Detox Treatment?
Detox treatment refers to the process by which someone is helped to become completely substance free. Sudden withdrawal from certain substances, such as alcohol or benzodiazepines, can be life-threatening in some circumstances. For other substances, such as heroin or heavy cannabis use, sudden withdrawal is not normally life-threatening, but can be extremely unpleasant.
The initial stage of detox treatment allows the individual to address their physical addiction and cease use of the substance in a controlled manner. During detox treatment withdrawals are managed with medication. This alleviates the symptoms to enable the person to be as comfortable as possible during detox. To increase the likelihood of a successful outcome, this should then be followed by a therapeutic programme. The right type of therapeutic support will address the behavioural patterns associated with the dependence and the psychological aspect of the addiction.
For dependence to substances such as alcohol the medication used is typically Librium although other medications can be used. For heroin detox the typical medications are subutex or methadone. Although there is no formal detox medication for cocaine and cannabis withdrawal, medication can be given to help with the anxiety and insomnia typically experienced upon cessation.
When should someone seek a Detox Treatment?
Detox treatment should be accessed by anyone who experiences withdrawal symptoms in the absence of a substance being taken. Withdrawal symptoms may be physical such as sweating, shaking, and vomiting or psychological such as intensely obsessing about a substance, depression or anxiety.
Other indications and warnings signs which may suggest someone needs a detox treatment programme include noticing someone’s physical health and appearance deteriorating. Noticeable changes to their normal behaviour and mood, such as unreliability, keeping strange hours, and being secretive may also be an indicator, as are issues surrounding their finances, employment and personal relationships.
Types of Detox Treatment Programs
Detox treatment can be offered at a range of residential clinics across the UK. A residential clinic will aim to treat and address all aspects of the dependence and will include detoxification as well as psychological treatment for someone with an addiction.
It is also possible to access a private treatment center overseas. Detox treatment can be organised in the UK prior to travel, and following this a comprehensive therapeutic programme in an exclusive treatment setting can be delivered overseas.
In some cases home detox treatment may be considered. Residential detox is preferred for medical reasons, however if this is not a suitable option and assessment indicates it is appropriate Triage Healthcare can organise a home detox. Full aftercare programmes and additional nursing visits, home doctor assessment, and live-in professional carers can also be arranged where required.
For those not in a position to fund treatment privately the NHS can offer treatment services for addictions. Typically a waiting list will be experienced, and gradual reduction plans or engagement with counselling or group therapy may be required before residential treatment is offered. Participation in support groups such as AA, NA or CA is recommended during this time.
How long could detox treatment for drug addiction take?
The duration of detox can vary depending on the substance and severity of the addiction. Typically detox programmes for alcohol take a minimum of 7 days and for substances such as heroin, cannabis and cocaine a minimum of 14 days is required in order to safely detox.
The risk of relapse is high following detox. Therefore, the participation in a full on-going psychological programme following is vital for long term abstinence.
How much does a private detox treatment cost?
The cost of treatment can vary depending on the duration of treatment, and the facilities, accommodation standard, location and level of medical cover provided within the treatment centre.
