The effects of cocaine addiction
The intense high from using cocaine can occur within seconds and the ‘crash’ or ‘comedown’ can be devastating, resulting in the immediate and overwhelming desire to take more cocaine. Furthermore, an addict can gain a tolerance to cocaine, requiring larger amounts more frequently to achieve the same strength of their former cocaine-induced euphoria.
Symptoms of cocaine use may include increased energy and mental alertness, hyperactivity, tremors, euphoria, talkativeness, rapid pulse, raised breathing rate, raised body temperature and blood pressure, a runny or stuffy nose and occasionally a bleeding nose, a decrease in appetite, confusion, paranoia, panic, anxiety, hallucinations and dilated pupils. After-effects of cocaine use may be lethargy, intense sleepiness and often depression.
Why professionally rehabilitate from cocaine addiction?
A medically supervised detox in a residential cocaine detox program is the safest and most effective way to become substance-free. Admission to a residential cocaine detox programme can also increase the chances of recovery and reduce the likelihood of relapse.
What types of cocaine rehabilitation centre options are there?
A residential rehabilitation cocaine program differs from other treatments in that it is more intensive. The residential aspect of the treatment means that the person is given some time away to really focus on getting themselves better. Another advantage of a residential rehabilitation cocaine programme is that the person is in a therapeutic environment surrounded by professionals that will make the process as easy as possible. Triage Healthcare works with a large number of facilities offering a residential rehabilitation cocaine program throughout the UK. All our workers and treatment facilities are registered with the appropriate professional bodies.
It is possible to access private overseas services. This option can be particularly appealing to those individuals who have already accessed help in the UK with limited success. By travelling overseas to access a rehabilitation cocaine program, the person is completely removed from their problematic surroundings. Overseas treatment can also represent better value for money in some cases.
It is also possible to access free NHS services. Whilst it would clearly be preferable to receive treatment without having to pay for it, it is important to remember that there is an imbalance between availability of addiction treatment in the NHS and the demand in the community. Therefore, there can often be long waiting lists involved when trying to access the NHS options.
How long could rehabilitation at a cocaine detox center take?
The duration of treatment for rehabilitation cocaine will vary depending on the severity of the situation and the physical well-being of the person with the addiction. The initial detox period for cocaine is typically up to two weeks in length, but can be more in extreme cases.
Once the person becomes completely free from cocaine, a rehabilitation cocaine programme will focus on the psychological side of the dependence. This will usually combine several types of therapy; some examples are group therapy, one-to-one therapy, educational seminars, and personal reflection. It is important that the person learns to understand the addiction and the reasons behind it in order to avoid relapse once they have left treatment. Typically a complete rehabilitation cocaine program will take between 6 and 12 weeks.
Post treatment rehabilitation support
It is vital that post-treatment support is engaged with to ensure that the person is able to develop their coping strategies in order to avoid relapse. Preferably, this will take the form of one-to-one counselling, which will focus on individual relapse triggers and the underlying reasons for the addiction. Cocaine Anonymous (CA) is an additional form of aftercare support which allows the person to interact with people that have been in the same situation. CA meetings typically take place during the peak times where cocaine users would normally use the drug in order to give them some structure and support for this difficult time.
