What is a Rum Detox?
A rum detox involves the prescription of medication to help those who are physically dependent to rum. A physical addiction to alcohol means that it is dangerous for such a person to stop drinking without any medical support. Therefore, a rum detox is often needed at the beginning of any kind of rum rehab treatment.
The medication typically used during a rum detox is Chlordiazepoxide (Librium); this is commonly used with the majority of alcoholic detoxification programmes. This significantly reduces the risk of experiencing the more severe and life-threatening withdrawal symptoms that can occur during a non-medicated rum detox.
Following on from this, rum rehab tends to focus on the psychological addiction to rum. That is, the underlying causes of the dependence and breaking the habitual pattern. At a residential rum rehab centre, the daily treatment programme will include one-to-one therapy, group therapy, education around addictions and other structured daily activities. Rum rehab also typically offers more holistic and relaxation therapies, such as acupuncture, reflexology and yoga.
Rum rehab is also likely to cater to a range of other alcohol addictions and also drug addiction, such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin, amongst others.
When should someone be admitted to an addiction centre to detox from rum
A person will need to attend a rum clinic if they feel that their rum addiction has or is getting out of hand. This is especially the case if someone is physically dependent to rum. Generally a woman has to drink 70 units and a man 100 units of rum in a week to experience physical withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking, sweating and nausea. In a 70cl bottle of rum there are typically 30 units, and in a litre bottle this increased to 40 units. Therefore, if you suspect you or a loved one needs to access a rum clinic, then call us now. We can help you find a rum addiction centre that can catered to your needs.
How long can it take to detox from rum?
As with all alcoholic substances, a detox in a rum addiction centre will last a minimum of seven to ten days. However, this means that individuals have limited access to the psychological and therapeutic support offered during a rum treatment program. Therefore, the minimum recommended time is four weeks. Some rum treatment programs cater for longer programmes as well, such as 12 weeks or longer.
