What is an Alcohol Retreat?

An alcohol retreat allows individuals time away from the daily stresses of life and the contributing factors to their alcohol addiction. People will focus their time on prayer, silence, contemplation and simplicity whilst at an alcohol retreat. This can be beneficial in addressing the psychological aspect present in all alcohol addictions.

Alcohol retreats typically take place in an environment conducive to spiritual recovery. Fundamentally, alcohol retreats heal the mind and aim to strengthen a person's sense of self. Going on an alcoholic retreat also means that people are completely removed from an environment full of potential triggers for relapse. An alcoholic retreat gives individuals the time away they need to completely focus on themselves and their recovery.

Alcohol retreats differ from other forms of treatment for alcohol addiction because it focuses primarily on spirituality. Typically, this means little access to the medical support that is often vital in the case of a physical dependence to alcohol.

When should someone be admitted to an alcohol retreat

Someone should be admitted to an alcoholic retreat if they need time away from their day-to-day life in order to overcome their addiction. However, if a physical dependence to alcohol is present then individuals should always ensure that the retreat will offer a medicated detox. If not, then this should be sought elsewhere. It is not safe to stop drinking immediately without medical support if a physical dependence is present.

What alternatives are there to an alcohol retreat?

A residential alcohol retreat may be particularly beneficial if an individual feels the need for intensive spiritual recovery. For those individuals that need a medicated detox private alcohol retreats are also worth serious consideration.

At a residential rehab centre, people will be provided with medication to make the alcohol withdrawal period as safe and comfortable as possible. Professional and highly trained staff will be available throughout the day and night during this time.

Afterwards, individuals will also have access to intensive psychological and therapeutic support. This will include group and one-to-one therapy, education around addictions and structured daily activities. Reflexology, acupuncture and yoga, amongst others, are other therapies frequently used at treatment centres.

Like residential alcohol retreats, the majority of treatment centres will also have a spiritual focus. Most centres are based on the 12 steps abstinence model, which refers to the belief in a higher power. Individuals will also be encouraged to attend AA meetings alongside any more professional treatment options.
